Abstract

A submerged arc welding flux which contains in its finished state 80-90% by weight of manganese silicate is made by melting a mixture containing equal quantities by weight of manganese, ore, e.g. pyrolusite, and silica, reducing the melt until it assumes a colour between dark brown and blackish brown, and then cooling the melt and granulating it. The mixture may also contain fluorspar. Reduction is effected by adding graphite to the melt. The effect of the graphite may be supplemented by maintaining a reducing atmosphere in the reverberatory furnace in which melting is performed.
