Abstract

820,996. Can openers. LINDAHLS MEKANISKA A.B. May, 10, 1957, No. 15009/57. Class 66. In a can opener of the type having a feed wheel 1 on a shaft 3 rotatable by a crank arm 6, and slidable means 11 for moving a cutting wheel 7 towards the feed wheel 1 to initially grip and puncture a cam and cause gears 2 and 8 associated with the feed wheel 1 and the cutting wheel 7 respectively to mesh, there is provided an eccentric disc 13 rotatable on the shaft 3 and adapted on rotation of the crank 6 anticlockwise as viewed in Fig. 1 to be connected to the crank 6 to move the slidable means 11 upward to part the wheels 1 and 7, and when the crank 6 is then rotated in the opposite direction as indicated by the arrow 20 to move the cutting wheel 7 back towards the feed wheel 1 before being disconnected from the crank arm 6, this action being effected by a disc 17 rotatable with the shaft 3 but tiltable to a position as indicated by the broken lines, the disc 17 having an arm 18 with a projection 19 thereon that can extend into a recess 16 in the eccentric 13 but is withdrawn therefrom when the arm 18 passes over a projection 15 on the slide 11. Method of operation.-When the crank 6 and thereby the disc 17 are turned clockwise, as indicated by the arrow 20, the projection 19 on the arm 18 snaps into the recess 16 of the eccentric 13 but is immediately lifted out of it as the arm 18 passes over the projection 15. Upon rotation of the crank 6 anti-clockwise the arm 18, after passing over the projection 15, will allow its projection 19 to snap into the recess 16 in the eccentric 13 to rotate the eccentric 13 through substantially half a revolution to displace the slide 11 to an upper position and thus part the wheels 1 and 7. When the crank 6, and thus the arm 18, are again turned in the direction of the arrow 20 the projection 19 turns the eccentric 13 clockwise until the arm 18 passes over the projection 15 to disengage the projection 19 from the eccentric 13. The wheels 1 and 7 are then in mesh with each other and further rotation of the crank 6 in a clockwise direction then operates the cutting wheel 7.
