Abstract

1,102,229. Electric can openers. JOHN OSTER MANUFACTURING CO. 11 June, 1965 [18 Aug., 1964], No. 24796/65. Heading B8D. An electric can opener has two switches 60, 85, in parallel, the switch 85 being kept closed only by the lateral thrust of a helical gear 39 against a switch arm 86 caused by the resistance of the can lid to the rotary cutter 36 which transmits load to the gear 39 through reduction gearing 37. To insert a can in the machine, an operating lever 57 is raised vertically which allows a plate 54 carrying the cutter 36 to pivot anti-clockwise. Fig. 5 (not shown), under the action of a spring 56, thereby raising the cutter and also a magnetized lid retainer 75. The can rim is inserted above a rotary feed wheel 35 driven from a motor 21 through the gearing 37. The lever 57 is lowered, pivoting the plate 54 clockwise through the engagement of members (57b) and (54e), Fig. 4 (not shown), to lower the cutter, and closing the switch 60 through members 62, 61 to start the motor 21. The feed wheel 35 is rotated and thereby the can also. The gear 39 slides on its shaft 42, so depressing the spring arm 86 and closing the switch 85. The operator may then release the lever 57 which is raised fractionally, Fig. 4 (not shown), under the spring pressure of the switch 60 which opens. The motor 21 continues to operate under control of the switch 85 until the load transmitted through the gearing 37 is released. The spring arm 86 then slides the gear 39 along its shaft at the same time opening the switch 85 to stop the motor. Knife sharpener.-Grinding wheels (23, 24), Figs. 1 and 11 (not shown), are driven simultaneously with the can opener through worm gears (29) and helical gears (30). A pressbutton (88) operating directly on the arm (86) of the switch (85), Fig. 9 (not shown), enables the sharpener to be used independently of the can opener.
