A can opener comprises an opening mechanism 54, 58 mounted in a frame 34 and a lid holding arm 148 pivoted to the frame 34 at 158 and carrying a magnet 150 in a position either to attract the lid of a can being opened or to hold the arm 148 in contact with the frame 34 (Fig. 4), the arm 148 being biased to the lid attracting position. The can opening mechanism comprises a serrated feed wheel 54, driven by an electric motor through a worm and nylon gears 98, 126, and a cutter wheel 58 freely pivoted on an operating lever 62. The lever 62 is pivoted in a block 70 which is displaceable vertically against spring 74; the shaft 56 is displaceable axially to allow for various sizes of cans. In operation, the arm 148 is released from contact with the frame, the lever 62 is pivoted away in an anticlockwise direction so that the cutter 58 is lifted clear of the feed wheel 54 and a can is inserted so that its lip engages the edge of the feedwheel 54. The lever 62 is then moved back and pressed firmly down so that the cutter engages the edge of the can lid. As it is pressed down lever 62 causes a microswitch 136 to start the motor; the can is rotated and the cutter 58 cuts around the lid. As the lid becomes separated from the can it is attracted by the magnet 150 and lifted clear of the can. The lever 62 is then lifted and the open can removed, the lid being subsequently removed from the magnet 150 and the arm 148 being pushed down to engage the frame to cover and protect the feed wheel 54. The can opener may be mounted directly on to a recessed electric wall socket 48 or alternatively on to a separate stand (Fig. 1, not shown). Specification 663,292 is referred to.
