Abstract

986,043. Electrically-operated can openers. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. July 1, 1963 [Sept. 19, 1962], No. 26053/63. Heading B8D. An electrically-driven can opener comprises a driving wheel 42 for engaging the outer surface of the can wall below the rim and an undriven rotary cutter 46 having an edge, Fig. 11, which severs the can rim and a can surface 46d, which bends the end seam outwards, thereby enabling the severed end to be easily removed. With the can rim inserted above the driving wheel 42, a handle 60 is pivoted forwards and causes a carrier 48 for the cutter 46 to slide rearwards, thereby forcing the edge of the cutter 46 against the can rim. Further movement of the handle 60 operates a control lever 84 to energize the motor 25 through a switch 80. The handle 60 and carrier 48 are connected by eccentric pins 72 which engage in bearing slides 74 movable in slots 51 in arms of the carrier. The wheel 42 has limited vertical movement due to spring washers 44. Specification 918,029 is referred to.
