Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A device for opening a tetrahedron-shaped flexible container by cutting off a flattened apex thereof comprises two members 1, 2, the member 2 being slidable within the member 1 and each member having two perpendicular walls 3, 4 or 11, 12, joined by a curved wall 5, or 13, a slot 6 being formed in the wall 5 for receiving the apex of the container, an abutment 10 being provided in the wall 4 for positioning the apex, and cutting edges being formed respectively by one edge 7 of the slot 6 and by the leading edge 14 of the wall 13, the cutting edges being movable one towards the other transversely to the slot 6 and arranged relatively to the abutment 10 such that the line of cut is not straight and intersects an edge of the apex at an angle greater than 45 degrees on the apex side of the cut. Each member 1, 2 has flanges 8, 9, or 15, 16. The wall 12 has a groove 17. In operation, the user grips the flanges and slides the member 2 out of the member 1 until the abutment 10 comes into contact with the end of the groove 17. The apex is then inserted into the slot 6 until the sides forming the apex bear against the walls 3, 4. The member 2 is then moved back into the member 1 so that the cutting edges 7, 14 cut off the apex. Alternatively, the device comprises two members which are hinged to each other so as to act like pincers. The two members defining the cutting edges may be biased apart, e.g. by means of a spring. Each member may be made from one piece of metal. The developed shape of the slot may be conical.
