A push button control for a steplessly variabla speed gear 2 driving e.g. a constant-tension textile winding machine, has means for reducing the gear ratio from a predetermined ratio to a creeper ratio and subsequently restoring the predetermined ratio, which comprise an arm 15 rotatable about a spindle 107 and geared to a selector shaft 111 so that when the creeper speed button is depressed a servomotor 27 is started which reduces the gear ratio, through the shaft 111, and drives the arm 15 in a clockwise direction until a spring 15a thereon trips a switch 110a to stop the servo 27 at the creeper speed; subsequent depression of the normal gear button restarts the servo 27 in the opposite direction to raise the gear ratio until the arm 15 trips a switch 109a to stop the servo at the previous gear ratio. The switch 109a is carried by an arm 109 rotatable about the spindle 107 to change the gear ratio. The arm 109 is biased in a clockwise direction by a torsion spring 108 and retained in position by a spring pressed pawl 21 and ratchet 17. For upshift, depression of a " faster " push button starts the servo 27 and rotates the arm 15, whilst the button is held depressed, in an anticlockwise direction a stop 15b of which arm 15 abuts the arm 109 and rotates the latter, the push-button bridging the switch 109a. For downshift, depression of a " slower " push-button rotates the arm 15 in a clockwise direction and energizes an electromagnet 20 which raises the pawl 21 to permit the spring 108 to rotate the arm 109 clockwise. The switch 110a, as shown, is carried by a fixed member 110, but may be mounted on a rotatable arm similar to 109, whereby the creeper speed ratio may be changed.
