Abstract

907,112. Governors. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. March 25, 1959 [April 3, 1958], No. 10932/58. Class 57. A fuel control system of a fuel injection engine comprises a governor driven at a speed proportional to the engine speed, a governor input member 14 arranged to vary the datum setting of the governor, a governor output member 13 controlled by the governor and connected to a fuel control member 11, and a differential device sensitive to movement of both the input and output members and arranged to prevent movement of the input member beyond a position corresponding to a certain maximum rate of fuel delivery to the engine, which position is determined by the instantaneous positions of the input and output members. The governor is of the centrifugal spring-loaded type and actuates a sleeve, the latter transmitting its motion to the shaft 13 which in turn via links 16, 17, 18 rotates a shaft 19 coupled by links 20, 21 to the fuel lever 11, thereby varying the supply of fuel. The movement of the shaft 19, in addition to actuating the fuel lever 11, also moves a floating lever 22, 26 which, at one end, is connected to a link 25 fixed to the shaft and, at its other end, is provided with a roller 27 which is urged into contact with a pivoted cam 28 by a spring 33, the movement of the lever 22, 26 being transmitted via a link 36 to a lever 37 which in turn operates one or other of switches 42, 43, depending upon whether the engine speed rises or falls, so as to energize a reversing electric motor 44. Rotation of the motor causes a shaft 45, connected to a lever 32, to rotate the shaft 14 and thereby react the governor loading to the new speed datum; the cam 38 is repositioned simultaneously by a link 30 connected to the lever 32 so as to allow the lever 22, 26 to return to its neutral position and thereby release the appropriate switch. The speed datum can be manually set by a lever 15 secured to the shaft 14, a limited range of movement of the latter being permitted by a lost-motion device 46, 47.
