Abstract
820,822. Cooling gases by direct contact with liquids. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. May 22, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 16238/57. Class 64(1) [Also in Group XII] In a combined cupola furnace and cooling tower system (see Group XII), a pair of cupolas 1 with off takes 2 are connected by a T-shaped flue 3 to a cooling tower 4 from which a flue 6 leads to a dust separator 7 and a fan 8. The ends 12 of the cross-piece of the flue 3 are of rectangular cross-section and overlap the similar offtakes 2, leaving a space 18, Fig. 3, through which cooling air is drawn. The flue is supported on beams 14 mounted on horizontal cross beams 15 extending tangentially of the cupola walls and pivotally mounted thereon, said beams 15 also forming part of a catwalk 10. A hollow damper 20, Fig. 3, mounted in the flue 3 on a hollow shaft 21 open to the atmosphere, is actuated by cables 23 on a beam 22, and is cooled by air drawn through the shaft and the damper into the flue through a slot 27. The flue also has water spray pipes 30 with nozzles 31, Fig. 7, disposed in openended pipes 32 projecting through the flue walls and formed with openings 33 for each nozzle. Air flowing between the spaces between the openings 33 and the nozzles 31 helps to prevent deposits of dust &c. forming on said nozzles. The stem 13 of the flue 3 which is of circular crosssection enters and is spaced from the similar tower 4, which is also provided with the pipes 32 enclosing the spray pipes 30.
