1,040,824. Metallurgical converter chimneys and hoods. PHOENIX-RHEINROHR A.G. VEREINIGTE HUTTENUND ROHRENWERKE. March 5, 1965, [March 7, 1964] No. 9515/65. Headings F4B, F4J and F4X. A heat exchanger for utilizing the waste heat from the waste gases of a converter comprises rows of water or water and steam carrying tubes 2, 3, 4 in a converter chimney 1, which rows are staggered in successive series transversely across the width of the said chimney and through the walls at each side thereof so that their projection on a plane perpendicular to the chimney occupies the whole chimney cross-section. The rows 2 of said tubes adjacent to the converter are preferably off-set by 90 degrees to the following rows 3. The said rows 2 carry water at a high speed and low temperature, and provide a turbulent gas flow ensuring early combustion of the carbon monoxide in the gas. The combined effect of the said rows 2, 3, 4 enables waste gases to be cooled to below 500‹ C., coarse dust to be extracted and little air to be entrained in the gas by infiltration, thus enhancing the heat transfer between the tubes and gases. The fine dust entrained may subsequently be removed in an electrostatic precipitator. The system may be used for both top and bottom blown converters.
