Abstract

819,932. Rotary furnace linings. EVANS, A. J. S. (Monolith Portland Midwest Co.). May 17, 1957 [Nov. 27, 1956], No. 36301/56. Class 51 (2). The lining of a rotary furnace 10 comprises bricks 18 laid in courses separated by arcuate shims 20, the main body portion of which is spaced from the metal shell 12 so as to restrict the transfer of heat thereto through the shims. The interior edge 22 of each shim is formed with small flanges 28 which engage the brickwork to space the inner edge 24 from the shell. Preferably, the adjacent meeting edges 26 of the shims do not coincide with brick joints. The shims may be of completely circular construction, and they may be spaced from the shell by combustible or non-combustible material. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the shim touches the shell, but the outer areas are formed with perforations to reduce the heat conducted therethrough. Another shim, Fig. 5 (not shown), is formed with small projections which touch the shell. A further modified construction, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), has the bricks laid in axial courses along the furnace drum with axially disposed shims.
