In a forced draught solid fuel furnace, a slag discharge device is automatically operated at intervals depending on the setting of a capacity control for the air fan ; the intervals between operations of the device become shorter when the rate of supply of combustion air is increased. The air inlet to the air supply fan 19 of a forced draught furnace is regulated by a damper 25. A slag pusher 6 is operated by a rack and pinion from an electric motor 18 through a linkage 15, 14 which is adjustable to vary the stroke of the pusher. The motor 18 is connected in parallel with the motor 26 driving the fan through a switch which is operated by a time relay device adjusted by the setting of the control 25. A separate time relay may be provided for the fully or half open positions of the control 25, or for intermediate positions as well. A contact 45 held open when the pusher 6 is in its retracted position, is closed when the pusher 6 operates so that the motor circuit is not broken until the pusher is again in its retracted position.
