The power supplied to a plasma-arc furnace is automatically controlled by varying the supply of a diatomic gas to the furnace atmosphere in accordance with a control signal derived from the difference between the actual value of arc voltage and a desired value, the variations of the gas supply maintaining the arc voltage at the desired value. The control system may comprise a polarized relay, a transistor switching amplifier and an electromagnetically controlled or motor driven valve in the supply of diatomic gas, which may be fed to the furnace chamber or to the plasma-arc burners.
