Abstract

819,215. Purifying gases. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Nov. 28, 1956 [Dec. 13, 1955], No. 36439/56. Class 55 (2). Acid constituents of fuel gases are removed by scrubbing them under pressure with a concentrated alkali metal carbonate solution at a temperature between 60‹ and 120‹ C., the scrubbing solution being withdrawn from and recycled to the scrubbing process through a regeneration step comprising decompression and/or expulsion of acid constituents by steam or an inert gas, there being added to the alkali metal carbonate solution a salt having an anion and cation different to those of the alkali metal carbonate and comprising an alkali metal salt of a weak inorganic or weak and difficultly volatile nitrogen-free organic acid or a salt of an organic base of low volatility with a weak acid. Suitable additives are the potassium and sodium salts of boric acid, vanadic acid, antimonious acid, arsenious acid or carbolic acid or salts of di- and tri-ethanolamine. The amount of additive employed may be equivalent so the amount of alkali metal carbonate in the oltution or less than this quantity. In an example a gas produced by gasefying coal was scrubbed with a solution containing 30 per cent potassium carbonate and 10 per cent sodium borate at 22 atmospheres pressure and a temperature of 100‹ C. and with a contact time of 30 seconds.
