Abstract
In refining Al by blowing with chlorine, the chlorine is supplied to the melt in the free state or combined with hydrogen, together with a hydrogen compound, hydrogen being liberated in the melt during the refining. Where the chlorine is supplied combined with hydrogen the hydrogen compound may be the same as that containing chlorine, e.g. HCl. Treatment with HCl may alternate with chlorine gas treatment or may be given simultaneously. A mixture of steam and chlorine may also be used and may alternate with a chlorine treatment. Specifications 358,494 and 685,311 [Group IV] are referred to.
