Abstract

818,921. Magnetic couplings. TOKHEIM CORPORATION. May 25,1956 [June 9, 1955], No. 16263/56. Class 35. [Also in Groups XXV and XXVI] A magnetic coupling between a motor shaft 70 and a pump shaft 500 comprises permanent magnets 140, 144, each preferably having four poles, on either side of a diaphragm 80, of stainless steel, brass or synthetic resin, which isolates the motor from the pumped liquid. The magnet 140 is carried by a rotor 74, formed with fan blades 75 for cooling the motor and connected to the shaft 70 with axial freedom of movement by a cross-pin 76. The magnetic thrust is taken by thrust bearings comprising balls bearing on thrust plates 148 carried by the diaphragm 80. Gas separated from the pumpedn at a liquid inlet 510 passes through the hollow shaft 500 and past the lower thrust ball into a housing 560, where it displaces liquid from the housing to provide a gaseous medium in which the driven member of the coupling can operate with reduced frictional drag.
