Abstract

847,634. Fluid bearings. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 17, 1958 [June 27, 1957], No. 20400/57. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXV] A two-part casing for a combined motor (see Group XXXV) and compressor or pump (see Group XXVI) supports two pairs of journal bearings 4, 5 and 6, 7 by means of flexible diaphragms 33, 34, 15, 48. One diaphragm 15 is solid but the others are perforated to allow the circulation of a gas, e.g. hydrogen, which lubricates the bearings. The hollow shafts 8, 9 are of 0.15% case hardened steel and the bearings are of " Stellite " (Registered Trade Mark.) The shafts 8 and 9 are coupled through serrated bushes 68, 72 by a third hollow shaft 14 which is sufficiently flexible to accommodate reasonable misalignment of the bearings. A thrust bearing is formed by a gimbal mounted stationary ring 89 and a rotating ring 88, the mating surfaces being optically flat, with one having spiral grooves 91 for the passage of gas for lubrication. The gas may be at a high temperature (300‹ C.) at some of the bearings.
