Abstract

818,890. Baling-presses. MASSEY-HARRISFERGUSON (MANUFACTURING) Ltd. Sept. 19, 1955 [Sept. 12, 1953], No. 31355/53. Class 94(1). In a hay or like baler, the hay is forced between converging pressure plates 11, 12, the latter being fixed to the machine frame and the former mounted for up and down swinging movement. A threaded rod 18 is pivoted at 19 to the plate 11 and encircled by a compression spring 20 which bears against a trunnion 26 slidable on the rod and carried by the long arms 25 of a bifurcated bell-crank lever. The initial compression of the spring is adjustable by nuts 21, 22 on the rod. The fulcrum of the lever is formed by an axle 23 rotatable in supports 24 secured the plate 11 and its short arms 27 are pivoted to rods 28 secured to brackets 29 on the plate 12. The arrangement functions to maintain the back pressure of the hay substantially constant, the plate 11 being moved upwardly against the action of the spring 20 as the pressure builds up and its mechanical advantage being progressively increased as the arms 27 approach the horizontal position.
