Abstract

818,759. Heat treating metals in vacuum; steel alloys. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. Sept. 27, 1956, No. 29554/56. Class 72 and 82(1) A method of hardening metals and alloys which can be hardened by heating and quenching, comprises heating the metals in a vacuum and then quenching them in a quenching medium contained in the same vacuum. As shown, the articles 2 may be held in a chamber 4 supported in an electric furnace 3 and connected to a vacuum through a T-piece 5 which also communicates with a container for quenching medium 1. When the articles have attained the desired temperature they are tipped into the quenching bath, which may be cooled. The method may be applied to alloys comprising 1.65 per cent C, 12 per cent Cr, 0.3 per cent Si, 0.3 per cent Mn, 0.1 per cent V or 1.4 per cent C, 3.5 per cent W, 0.3 per cent Cr, 0.3 per cent V, the balance in each case being iron and impurities
