[Also in Group XXX] Sand is delivered by a tip-wagon 20 into a hopper 21 whence it is delivered to a tank 10 by a bucket elevator 22, there to be mixed by a stirring device 24, 25 with water admitted through a valved pipe 30 (not shown). The mixture is forced by a pump 35 along a pipe 38 extending along one side of a sludge-drying bed 12, 13. Along the pipe 38 there are provided outlet unions to which flexible hoses 40 may be fitted by bayonet or like connections for ejecting the semi-liquid sand on to a layer of clinker 15 forming the base of the bed to form a layer 16. The liquid from the sand drains away through the clinker layer 15. Sludge to be dried is fed through valved ports 45 from a channel extending along the far side of the bed. A single portable hose may be used instead of the individual hoses. The sand may be levelled by a vertically-adjustable screeder carried on a travelling gantry. The travelling gantry may also carry means for mechanical sludge-lifting as described in Specifications 723,651 and 723,709. The bed may be divided into sections, each fed by one hose.
