Class 100(4) A keyboard for a stenographic typewriter in which certain characters are formed by the combination of two or more type characters, those type characters intended to be combined to form desired written characters being situated side-byside, and in which each of the fingers operates from one to three keys arranged one below the other, the uppermost keys 48, 49 are operated by the two first fingers whilst each thumb operates a single key 54, 55 so that the four fingers, excluding the thumb, of each hand only move upwards and downwards (or forwards and backwards) whilst the hand itself remains at rest.
