382,736. Typewriters. KEINING, G., 26, Grandweg, Soest, Germany. Oct. 16, 1931, No. 28809. [Class 100 (iv).] Stenographic machines ; types ; platen-shift mechanism.-In a machine for typing ordinary characters, and shorthand signs representing a group of vowels and consonants combined with a group of vowels, the types for the shorthand signs are arranged in a single shift-case. The machine shown in Fig. 4 is provided with sliding type-bars 1 each carrying three types 2, the lower and middle types being for ordinary characters, and the upper type for a shorthand sign. The platen 3 is provided with shift-keys 18, 17 for the capital and shorthand types respectively, a lock 20 being effective when the key 17 is employed. Case-shift mechanism may replace the platen-shift mechanism. A suitable set of types is shown in Fig. 3, the top rows being shorthand types corresponding to the ordinary types in the other rows. The consonant shorthand-types preferably include the sign of one group of vowels only, appropriate shorthand-types being provided for the signs of the groups of vowels.
