[Class 100 (iv)] Machines for writing music ; types ; keyboards.-A type-bar or type-lever machine of standard form is provided with types for printing notes and the conventional signs, and each note-printing type-head is provided with a black-note type and a white-note type, which are of the same pitch and are selected by the shift-mechanism. Figs. 2 and 3 show the keyboard and types of a single-shift machine, the note-printing keys and types being arranged in the middle. The typeheads may be curved to fit the platen-roller. The note-types print also the staff-lines, the types being made slightly narrower than the type-heads to permit the lines to show. To permit printing of chords, the note-keys are arranged to act as dead-keys. The stemtypes have the stems arranged at one side thereof so as to join the previously printed notes. The types for large signs, such as the clefs, may be divided vertically and mounted on separate type-bars. The types for printing ties are half as thick as the distance between the staff-lines, this distance being equal to one line-spacing movement. To facilitate printing of the time-signatures, the numeral types are so arranged that the 4 and 8 types, and the remaining types print on the lower half and upper half of the staff respectively. The position of the staff-lines and ledger-lines is shown by means of lines on an indicator secured to the type-guide. The indicator-lines may be of different colours.
