Abstract

818,078. Statistical apparatus. DIRKS, G. July 8, 1957 [April 19, 1956], No. 11889/56. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XVI] An apparatus for feeding a sheet to a predetermined one of a number of possible positions has means for sensing in succession a series of marks on the sheet, the marks being co-ordinated with the possible positions, a counter responsive to the marks, means for pre-setting the counter in accordance with a required position and means for arresting the sheet in response to the occurrence of a pre-determined count in the counter. In one embodiment the sheet is arrested when the counter registers the predetermined count and in another when a device which senses a continuous signal fails to detect that signal. A sheet 3, Fig. 1, is driven in the direction of arrow 4 by a roller 1 turned by motor 5 through a clutch 6. Sheet 3, Fig. 2, has lines 9/1 to 9/8, each of which has an associated mark 10/1 to 10/8, e.g. holes, printed marks or magnetic marks, which may be sensed by a suitable device. A sensing head 18 senses the marks which are counted by a multicathode gas-discharge tube which steps once for every mark sensed. Pre-setting of the counter is effected by closing the appropriate one of key contacts 14/1 to 14/8, thus any line may be selected. The counter fires valve 22 which operates a magnet brake 7 to stop the sheet feed mechanism. Opening contacts 24 releases magnetic brake 7 and allows clutch 6 to once again drive roller 1 to eject the paper. Grippers may be used to arrest the sheet instead of a magnetic brake. Instead of moving the paper, the sensing head may first scan the marks and be arrested in a position indicated by the counter. The head is then restored to its starting position, a sheet feeding mechanism being engaged to feed the sheet an equivalent distance. A chain of electronic counting stages may be used instead of the multi-cathode gasdischarge tube. An initiating mark, sensed by a second sensing head in conjunction with a gate circuit, may be used so that the counter does not start to count until the additional mark is sensed.
