[Also in Group XXXIX] In a non-linear reactor in which the permeability Á of a magnetic core D is varied by current iÁ through a control winding W, the winding W extends through the core and an A.C. winding L is wound around the core so that the fluxes #Á and # produced by the two windings are orthogonal. The winding W may be disposed to saturate only part of the core and may extend perpendicularly to the plane of the core. The core may also be potshaped. Fig. 4 shows a transformer in which the windings L1, L2 are electromagnetically coupled when no current iÁ flows and are not so coupled when a current iÁ saturates the core.
