Abstract

817,325. Respiratory appliances. NORMALAIR Ltd. May 1, 1956 [May 2, 1955], No. 12690/55. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a system in which a warning device p is operated when the respiration rate of the wearer of a mask (not shown) falls below a predetermined value, the mask is provided with a diaphragm a which, on each inhalation, causes switch b to close and a current pulse to be fed to a heater winding d associated with a thermistor e which forms one arm of a Wheatstone bridge which also comprises a similar thermistor f to compensate ambient temperature variations and two resistors g and h of negligible temperature coeffiicent of resistance. The bridge output current is fed to a relay winding k and, under normal breathing conditions, maintains a movable contact m clear of a fixed contact o. When the breathing rate falls below the permitted value, the thermistor cooled during the exhalation period sufficiently to reduce the current through the relay winding k, so that contact m closes on contact o, thus operating the warning device p. The death of the wearer of the mask, or a fault in the apparatus, produces a similar effect. The thermistor e is made of a material of high negative temperature coefficient of resistance, e.g. oxides of copper, uranium, or manganese, and may be in the form of a flat strip, a spirally grooved rod, a thin-walled tube, or a bead encased in insulating cement and located, with the heater coil d, in an evacuated glass tube.
