Abstract
815,908. Electrodepositing bright metal. DEHYDAG DEUTSCHE HYDRIERWERKE G.m.b.H. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 5, 1954], No. 31541/55. Addition to 806,403. Class 41. Bright electroplatings are obtained from acid baths by using, together with a brightener, instead of the tertiary amino compounds of the formula G-R-N(R 1 )(R 2 ), free from neutralized or unneutralized carbonyl groups and containing halogen atoms not aromatically bound, where G is halogen, thiocyano, cyano, nitro, or nitroso, R is a divalent cyclic or acyclic hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by alkyl, hydroxyl or further cyano, thiocyano, or nitro groups or a halogen atom, and R 1 and R 2 are cyclic or acyclic organic radicals which may be interrupted by oxygen, sulphur, or nitrogen, or substituted by a halogen or hydroxyl or may form jointly with the nitrogen atom part of a saturated heterocyclic ring system, which compounds are used as additives in the parent Specification, a quaternary ammonium compound formed by re-arrangement of the chlorine-, bromine-, or iodine-substituted divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having at least two carbon atoms or its monohydroxy derivative on the amine nitrogen atom to form a ring with said nitrogen atom. The invention is applicable to plating baths for zinc, nickel, chromium, precious metals, and copper. In an example, bright copper deposits are obtained on iron parts electroplated at a current density of 0.5 to 8 amps./sq. dm., from an acid copper sulphate bath prepared with tap water and containing quaternary ammonium compounds formed by rearrangement from 1-diethylamino-, 1-piperidyl-, 1-morpholino-, or 1-diethanolamino-3-chloro-propanol-2 together with, as a brightener, N: N-dipropyldithiocarbamic acidn-butyl ester-#-sodium sulphonate. Additional brighteners may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifccation 762,257.
