Abstract

815,493. Pipe couplings. NORMALAIR Ltd. May 15, 1957 [May 26, 1956], No. 16349/56. Class 99(1). A quick release coupling comprises a first unit, Fig. 1, which may be fixed to the oxygen equipment of an aircraft, housing a non-return valve 7 and a fixed extension member 5 with communicating passages, and a second unit, Fig. 2, which may be connected to charging equipment and has within sealing means 19a preloaded extension member 21 adapted to be displaced by the extension 5 when the coupling is made. The first member has a tubular sleeve 1 with a fixing flange 2, an internal three-start screw-thread 3 and a tapered portion 4 from which projects the extension 5 with four radial holes 6 which communicate with a passage within the extension. The valve 7 is provided within the part 4 into which is screwed a union 10 locked by a nut 12. The second member has an outer sleeve 13, with a screw-thread 14 corresponding to the screw-thread 3, in which is rotatably mounted a blank ended sleeve 15 having a small hole at one end to accommodate the member 21 and screw-threaded at the other to engage a union 17 having a duct 27 therethrough. A further sleeve 18 which retains the pliable sealing sleeve 19 is located within the sleeve 15 and contains a plunger 20 on which is mounted the member 21 having four holes 25 which communicate with a compartment 26. The member 21 is thrust through the sealing sleeve 19 in pressure tight relationship, the plunger 20 being retained in position by spring 22. The union 17 also serves to retain the sleeves 18, 19 and spring 22 in position. A rubber hand grip 23 encloses the second member. In operation the extension 5 presses the member 21 inwards against spring 22 until it is sufficiently far through the sleeve 19 to allow fluid flow. On disconnection the non-return valve 7 seals the system and the member 21 follows the extension 5 into the sealing sleeve 19 preventing leakage.
