815,416. Expanding pulley gearing. HOOVER, W. S. Aug. 8, 1957, No. 25110/57. Class 80 (2). An expanding V-belt pulley comprises a flange 12 rigid with a driving member 8, and an axially movable flange 6 co-operating with a housing member 19 to define an annular chamber 2 partially filled with a flowable medium 1, such that rotation of the pulley promotes a centrifugal head in the medium to vary the axial thrust on the pulley member 6, the thrust at constant rotational speed tending to resist a decrease in pulley diameter being minimal at maximum pulley diameter. The pulley flange 12 is secured by a grub screw 9 and key 10 to a shaft and a shaft sleeve 8 and locates a bush 17 upon which the belt rides when the pulley is at minimum diameter. The flange 6 is keyed at 16 for axial movement on the sleeve 8 and cooperates with the housing member 19 axially secured to the sleeve 8. The flowable material 1 may be ball shot, oils, or oils loaded with heavy particles, and the angles of the sides of the chamber may be chosen to provide various torque-speed characteristics. The movable flange may be spring-loaded and have maximum and minimum diameter limit stops. A double-ended duplex pulley is described.
