Abstract

927,736. Fluid bearings. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIKEN N. V. July 20, 1961 [July 23, 1960], No. 26332/61. Class 12 (1). An axial thrust bearing which is supported on a self-generated fluid pressure, has a fixed member 4 having a cavity 3 which receives a thrust portion 2 of a rotary shaft 1. The fluid pressure is produced by shallow " spiral "- shaped grooves 5 of rectangular section which are distributed round the axis of a bearing surface of the portion 2 of the shaft 1, alternatively the grooves may be in the cavity 3 of the member 4. In use, the rotation of the shaft 1 causes the fluid medium to be forced from the exterior of the grooves to the interior where it passes into a chamber 6 which, having an opening at one side thereof, allows the fluid to escape. The chamber 6 may be formed in either the member 4 or in the portion 2 of the shaft 1, or partly in each. The width of the land between grooves is equal to the width of a groove. In an embodiment the shaft is supported radially by a ball-bearing and in another embodiment the shaft passes through the thrust bearing, seals being positioned at each side of the chamber 6.
