Abstract

815,312. Electric heating resistors. MOND NICKEL CO. Ltd. Nov. 30, 1955 [Dec. 15, 1954], No. 34308/55. Class 39(3) An electric heater consisting of a resistance wire embedded in magnesium oxide or a mixture thereof with another insulating material in a metal sheath has a nickel layer firmly and uniformly bonded to the wire. The nickel layer is 0.0001 in. to 0.05 in. thick and the inner surface of the sheath which is of nickel-chromiumiron alloy also has a nickel layer. The resistance wire may be helical and is an alloy comprising 65 per cent or more of one or more of iron, nickel or cobalt, and 10-15 per cent of chromium or molybdenum or both, with or without other elements such as tungsten, niobium, zirconium, titanium, silicon, manganese, aluminium and magnesium up to 20 per cent. The nickel layer contains 93 per cent or more of nickel and may contain manganese, silicon, aluminium, titanium and cobalt. The nickel layer is applied electrolytically, by hot-working, vapour deposition, metal spraying over overlaying. The resistance wire may be drawn and annealed after coating.
