Class 73 A label holding device in a bottle labelling machine comprises a pivoted, positively operated, cranked arm 5 with a vertical limb having a fixed pad 11 to hold a label against the body of a bottle and a spring urged, pivoted part 13 having a pad 17 to hold a label against the bottle's neck; a stop 20 on the frame of the machine (not shown) restricts the post's movement so that its pad 17 does not contact the bottle before the neck label is applied. The cranked arm 5 has a dependent limb 6 housed in a bearing 7 and carrying cam-contacting rollers 9 all on the underside of a table 4 on which the bottles are traversed. The cam (not shown) serves to turn the arm 5 from a non-operative position A to a position B where the pads contact the labels on the bottles which are applied by stationary picker-plates, such as D. The post 13 is pivoted to the vertical limb of two arms 5 at 12a, is urged by the spring 15 to an inclined position to conform with the bottle neck and is constrained in the reverse inclination by a spring supporting bracket 14 on the housing of the pad 11. A holder 16 carrying the pad 17 can be adjusted for height by sliding it along the post and locating it by spring and ball 21 in one of a series of notches 13a. The stop 20 engages the upper end of the post as it approaches the position B whilst a body label is applied and does not release it until the bottle has advanced further to receive a neck label. The stop 20 is adjustable for position.
