Abstract
814,967. Valves &c. KIDDE CO. Ltd., W. Feb. 21, 1957 [Feb. 6, 1956], No. 3705/56. Class 135. An inflater for life jackets comprises a body having a passage 4 communicating with a gas. capsule 2, a nylon seating member 7 held in the passage, a check member 5, e.g. a ball or tapered member located in the passage upstream the seating member and to be held thereagainst by the pressure in the gas capsule, and a longitudinally movable plunger 12 for displacing the check member to allow flow to an outlet 20 communicating with a life jacket. The actuating mechanism for the plunger 12 comprises a lever cam 24 pivoted to the body at 25, which is operated by a pull knob, Fig. 2 (not shown), via a pull cord. The body and knob are enclosed by a water-tight rubber gaiter. The gas capsule may be recharged by connecting the outlet to a suitable supply and holding the inflator in an inverted position so that the check member 5 will reseat itself under gravity. The check member or the wall of the passage is so shaped, e.g. at 8, that the check member is prevented from sealing off the restricted end of the passage 4 remote from the seating member during charging.
