Abstract
775,611. Respiratory appliances. PAGE, R. E. March 21, 1955 [March 29, 1954], No. 8164/55. Class 81(2) In an open circuit under-water breathing apparatus the mouthpiece is provided with inlet and exhaust valves so that it can be blown clear' of water, if necessary, while below the surface. The device has a cylindrical body 30 from which a flat tubular connection 51 extends radially to the actual mouthpiece. At each end a disc valve 38, 38<SP>1</SP> is clamped by a flanged connecting member 44, 44<SP>1</SP> and valve 38 serves as an inlet valve, while the other 38<SP>1</SP> serves as an exhaust walve and leads to the usual exhalation tube and valve of the breathing equipment. If the mouthpiece becomes filled with water while submerged, the user blows into it and so forces the water out through the valve 38<SP>1</SP>, this being repeated until the system is clear. In order that complete clearance may be obtained, the exhaust valve seating is large enough for its inner edge 36<SP>1</SP> to be flush with the inner face of the body 30, so that no water can be trapped. Air is supplied to the mouthpiece through a two-stage pressure regulator mounted on the air cylinder strapped to the user's back.
