Abstract

814,351. Strip-cutting machines. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. May 31, 1957 [Aug. 23, 1956], No. 17345/57. Class 87(2). Strip is cut from sheet material 4 on a roller 3 by a pair of circular cutters 35, the spacing between which is adjustable and which rotate on ball bearings 38 mounted in brackets 21 at the end of a rocker arm 8 to maintain the peripheries of the cutters in engagement with the roller 3. The roller bearings are mounted on screw threaded collars 31, 32 on a screw threaded shaft 27, the portions 29, 30 having right and left hand threads respectively. By turning the collars the spacing between the cutters 35 mounted on them is altered and they are fixed in their adjusted spacing by set-screws 33 which screw down on flats 34 on the shaft 27. The minimum spacing is fixed by stop collars 39 press-fitted on the shaft 29 and the maximum by the length of the threaded portions 29, 30. Visual indication of the spacing is given by fingers 48 pointing to the peripheries of the cutters and projecting from bars 46, 47 which are graduated in inches. These marker bars 46, 47 extend from an arm 23 which carries the shaft 27 at one end and at the other end has pivot pins 24 by which it is pivoted in the brackets 21 (which are in the form of eye-bolts screwed to the rocket 8), this pivotal mounting allowing the shaft 27 to rock and thus allowing the cutters 27 to bear equally on the sheet 4 even if there is misalignment. The parts are so proportioned that one revolution of the collars 31, 32 moves the cutters from one marked position to the next. A visual check is provided by V-grooves 40, 41 and 42 in the collars 31, 32, the stop collars 39 and the end of the arm 23, which are in line when the setting is correct. The cutters may be moved further back if necessary by transferring the eye-bolts from holes 20 to holes 22. The rocker arm 8 may be raised and lowered by a hand-lever 9. The strip, after being cut, passes over a brush and is wound on a reel for storage.
