Class 106 (1) Apparatus for counting leaves or sheets in a pile or packet includes means for inserting, after each batch of a predetermined number of sheets, a marking slip. The counting apparatus shown is that described in Specification 557,086, in which the operations of a mechanically driven suction blade 29 and stripping arm 30 are counted as they successively engage and depress the comers of the sheets 11. The marking slips are cut from a roll 31 of stiff paper. The web passes over rollers 33, 34, through a guide 35, between feed rollers 36, 37 and through a further guide 54 to the cutting knives 56, 57. The roller 34 is carried by a cam-operated lever 38 which prior to a feeding operation forms a loop in the web. The feed rollers 36, 37 are geared together and to a shaft 44 carrying a ratchet wheel engaged by a pawl 48 carried by a tubular shaft surrounding the shaft 44 and fast with a gear 49 meshing with a rack 50. A snail cam produces a sudden movement of the rack, by an amount determined by an adjustable stop 67 for the rack lever, after each batch of a predetermined number of slips has been counted, so as to project the end of the web into the gap formed in the pile of sheets by the suction blade 29. A brake (not shown) acting on the spool carrying the paper roll prevents over-feeding. The knife 56 is then operated against a spring 66 by a cam-controlled arm 58. The counting- apparatus and slip-inserting means are mounted on a carriage movable by a motor up and down a frame pivoted at its base about a horizontal axis. According to the Provisional Specification, the final paper guide 54 is rocked by the arm 58 adjacent to a single stationary knife. Specifications 688,251 and 710,275 also are referred to.
