Abstract

1309235 Cutting material into lengths DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 8 May 1970 [13 May 1969] 24209/69 Heading B4B A method of cutting material into lengths, each substantially equal to a predetermined value, comprises feeding the material 2 past a cutting mechanism 4, operating the mechanism to sever a predetermined length of the material, sensing each end of the severed length 5 with a sensing device 6 to measure the severed length, the device and the length being relatively movable, to detect any variation from the predetermined value, and supplying a signal dependent on any required correction to the cutting mechanism to adjust the operation of the cutting mechanism to obtain substantial uniformity of the size of a subsequently severed length with the predetermined value. Apparatus described for performing the method comprises a conveyer belt 1, a first measuring unit 3, a second measuring unit 6, and the cutting device 4. In use of the apparatus, the desired predetermined size of a cut length is set on displays 11, 17 of bi-directional counters 10, 15. The material to be cut, e.g. unvulcanized tread rubber 2, is advanced on the conveyer belt 1 and rotates a knurled wheel 7 of the unit 3. A pulse generator 8 actuated by rotation of the wheel 7 transmits pulses to operate a display 12 of the counter 10. When the figure in display 12 reaches that in display 11 the counter 10 emits a pulse which causes a cutter 19 to be operated and cut a length 5 from the material 2. A knurled wheel 13, pulse generator 14, and photo-transistor 16 are connected to the counter 15 in such a way that the leading and trailing edges of a severed length 5 of material cause the commencement and interruption of the flow of pulses from generator 14 to a display 18 as they pass the photo-transistor 16. Thus the display indicates the true size of the severed length 5. The figure in display 18 is then compared with the desired size shown in display 17 and if there is a difference, or alternatively if the difference exceeds a certain tolerance, a signal is sent from counter 15 to counter 10 to adjust display 11 and thus ensure that the next length cut is of the desired size. The cutter 19 may be moved across the belt whilst this is braked or may be carried on a carriage which is clamped to the moving belt at the desired times. The sizes of all cut lengths may be recorded and any lengths outside the given tolerance range may be marked or rejected.
