Abstract
813,998. Universal joints. BRIGHTSIDE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and HURT, G. Dec. 17, 1956 [Dec. 19, 1955], No. 36357/55. Class 80 (2). The parts of a universal joint for a rolling mill are detachably held together by a pin 27 which passes transversely through the forked end 11 of one shaft, slippers 13 in cylindrical and dovetailed engagement therewith, a flatsided spade end 20 of the coupled shaft, bearing members 22 having cylindrical engagement in the spade 20. and flat-faced engagement with the slippers 13, and a spherical bearing member 26 seated in the members 22, and the pin 27 is detachably secured in the fork 11 as follows. Screwed to one end of the pin 27 is an extension 32 having a diametral rib 33 normally engaging a radial groove 35 in a flanged ring 30 fast in the fork 11. To remove the pin 27 it is first lifted against a spring 36 and turned through a right-angle to align the rib 33 with through slots 38 in the ring 30, whereupon the pin 27 can be pulled out downwards by a tool screwed into a tapped hole 39 in its other end. Axial displacement of the pin 27 during rotation of the joint is prevented, partly by the spring 36 and partly by making the end 39 heavier.
