813,987. Coating webs. AGFA A.G. Sept. 1, 1955 [Sept. 3, 1954], No. 25191/55. Class 140. An apparatus for applying a stripe of fluid coating material to a film strip comprises a film supporting roller 3 and a nozzle 2 resiliently mounted to contact the film and adjustable so that part 24 of the nozzle orifice 26 contacts the approaching film while the distance of the film withdrawal side of the nozzle from the film can be varied to vary the thickness of the coating. As shown in Fig. 1, a film 23 is passed over guide rollers 4, 5, 6 and over the roller 3 mounted in a plate 11 beneath the coating nozzle 2. The nozzle 2 is mounted in a head 1 clamped in a ring 12, mounted on telescopic arms 13, 14 pivoted at 19 in the plate 11 and adjusted axially of the arms by a knob 16 with a scale 18 through gearing in a housing 17. The head can be rotated about the longitudinal axis of the arm 14 by adjusting a ring 22 with a scale. The knob 16 and ring 22 act as counterweights or the pivot 19 may have a spring for resiliently mounting the head. The head can be moved transversely of the film strip by another telescopic arm and scaled head. The edge of the film is guided by contact with a disc 27; the roller may be slightly conical. Alternatively the film is guided by two spaced rollers 29, 30 contacting the edge of the film and rotated thereby, the rollers being mounted in a disc 33 and the film being slightly compressed transversely by them. The other edge of the strip may pass in a groove between the end of the roller and a ring. The roller has an annular groove 61 to ensure that perforated portions of the film do not touch the rollers. The nozzle is not positioned vertically above the spindle 7 of the roller, so that only the side of the nozzle which the film approaches contacts the film and this side is rounded. The contact pressure of the nozzle is adjusted by the knob 16 and ring 22. The nozzle head, Fig. 3, comprises a member 1 having an internal member 36 with a bore 37 through which passes a pin 38 with a plunger 39 for closing the nozzle aperture. The pin is moved upwardly by the action of a spring 44 to open the nozzle when a head 41 is rotated. The nozzle may have more than one aperture. The head is supplied with magnetite dispersion through an inlet from a reservoir 52 adjustably mounted on a telescopic upright 55, 57. The plate 11 is mounted by a member 49 to slide on a member 51 on a base 50 so that the unit is easily removable. A second unit may be provided to deposit a compensating track along the other edge.
