Abstract

An iron or steel body has a coating of metal or alloy having a melting-point of at least 1000 DEG C. and, superimposed thereon, a coating of metal oxide having a melting-point of at least 1000 DEG C. The metal coating is applied by spraying, sputtering or electrolytically, and the oxide coating is applied by spraying. A further coating of harder metal oxide may be sprayed on. The metal coating may be heated by torching before deposition of the oxide, and may be composed of nickel, copper, iron, molybdenum, cobalt, chromium, or a nickel-, iron-, or cobalt-base alloy, which may contain chromium, of which specific examples are given. The metal oxide may be any of those disclosed in Specification 745,257 and, in particular, alumina, chromium oxide, spinel, zirconia, or wollastonite or zircon which are included as oxides by definition.
