Abstract
813,128. Spring upholstery. ELSON & ROBBINS Ltd. Aug. 12, 1957 [May 11, 1956], No. 14789/56. Class 52(4) In a resilient seating surface an articulated platform, made of inextensible members extending over at least 30 per cent of the area of the frame and connected together to permit relative movement in two mutually transverse directions, is connected at each corner to the corresponding corner of the chair &c. frame by a pair of tension springs 9, 10 which may diverge from the platform to the frame. As shown in Fig. 1, the platform is constituted by a central ring 4 connected by short and long strips 5, 7 connected to rings 6, 8. The springs 9, 10 join rings 6 to connections 12 on the frame and additional springs 11 connect rings 8 to the corners of the frame. In a modification, the front rail of the frame is replaced by a tension spring to give a sprung edge. As shown in Fig. 5, the platform consists of the top coil of a helical spring 19 in the centre, strips 5 and the top coils of helical springs 17. Lower springs 15, 18 connect the chair frame to the lowest coils of springs 17 and these lowest coils to the lowest coil of spring 19. to give a crown to the seating surface. In a modification only the central spring 19 need be provided. For a settee &c., two side by side surfaces may be provided, the opposed sides thereof being joined by a tension spring.
