Abstract
812,676. Re-working valve guides etc.; rolling. CHAMPIGNY, P. Oct. 22, 1957, No. 32911/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A process for decreasing the internal diameter of a cylindrical bore such as a valve guide, comprises forming a helical groove in the internal surface by a rolling operation which produces inwardly-projecting helical ridges. The main tool A consists of a rod 1 with an extension 3 of reduced diameter in which is formed a recess 5 adapted to receive a discshaped roll 10 and axial stems 11 journalled in shallow end portions 7 and 8, one stem being held in the seating by a circlip inserted in the annular groove 13 and the other stem by bending the walls of the recess portion 8 to form lips 14. An initial indentation in the bore is made by a tool B comprising a cylindrical body 16, with a semi-cylindrical groove 17 in which is mounted a short rod of hard metal 20 having substantially the same diameter as the roll 10. The indentation is made by a hammer blow on the handle 15. The square head of the tool A is then inserted in the bore D and the tool pulled through until the wheel 10 engages the indentation 23 when a rotating device is fitted to the square head to enable the helical groove 25 to be formed. After-the rolling operation the ridges 26 are machined and polished to the required diameter and finish.
