A polyethylene protective cap 30 for a bottle or other container A closed by a pilfer-proof cap 10 of aluminium or other thin metal has a cylindrical body 31 with a closed end section 32 and a skirt section 34, the end part 32 having internal longitudinal ridges 35 which engage indentations 20 on cap 10 enabling the cap 30 to be used as a tool for the fracture and removal of cap 10. The skirt 34 engages a bead 36 on the container to form a seal against bacterial and other contamination of the pouring finish of the container.
