A stand for a portable electric drill D comprises an electromagnetic foot 1 to grip the work, a pillar 12 on the foot, and a bracket 20 supporting the drill for feed movements, effected as by a screw or a rack-and-pinion gear 22, 25. The bracket 20, supporting the drill between a yoke 38 (with an adapter, if required), closed by a strap 41 and a clamping screw 47 with a lock nut 49, is moved along the pillar by a feed lever 30 keyed and clamped by a screw to either end of the pinion shaft 27 in the bracket. Washers 35 (Fig. 2, not shown) and springs anchored to the shaft 27 prevent its rotation due to the weight of the drill. The tubular pillar 12, rotatable on a spigot 13 on the foot 1 between limits fixed by stops upstanding from the foot and co-operating with the rack 22, is clamped by a nut 17, 18 on a post 10 within the pillar and fixed to the foot. An annular groove 4 in the foot receives the coil of the magnet, and a rearwardly extending arm 5 on the foot stabilizes the stand and contains a rectifier, switches, &c., for the magnet. In the case of a larger foot 1, an opening is provided in the foot to permit passage of the drill. In a modification, Fig. 3, the pillar is supported in a bearing 59 in the foot and a bearing 57 in a column 53, which may be split at 73 to enable the bearing 57 to be clamped by a bolt 74; alternatively or in addition, a clamping screw 72 may be provided to bear against the pillar. The drill is held in the bracket by a chain 64 and may be adjustable laterally in the lower seating 63 of the bracket. The rectifier 55 is housed in the column.
