A portable . boring-machine comprises a hollow-pillar 1 on which is rotatably mounted a sleeve 6 carrying an axially-movable cutterhead 7. A spindle 2 extending through said pillar is screwed at 2<SP>1</SP> for securing the base 4 of the pillar to a support 40. The cutter-head and sleeve are rotated by an electric motor (not shown), driving a gear-train 16, 17, 19-21 through a flexible shaft. The feed of the cutterhead is governed by the rotation of a spindle 11 engaging a nut 12 on the sleeve 6. This rotation is produced by the rotation of a worm-wheel 29 by a hand-operated worm 27 on a shaft 28, thus advancing or retarding the rotary movement of gears 24, 31, 32 relative to the cutter-head, gear 32 driving the screw through a pinion 33.
