811,071. Winding yams. MASCHINENFABRIK SCHWEITER A. G. Jan. 24, 1956 [Jan. 24, 1955; Dec. 21, 1955], No. 2384/56. Class 120(2) In an automatic winding machine for solid cops having short conical butts, the winding spindle has a conical nose which co-operates with and thrusts against a conical portion on the butt during the entire winding operation. As shown, an annular abutment 8c on the butt 8 engages in the tail holder 3 mounted in the support 4 by a ball bearing 5. The support 4 slides on the rod 6 and presses the holder 3 against the butt 8 firmly held by the conical nose of the spindle 1 engaging a conical portion 8b of an axial passage 8a in the butt 8. During winding, the butt 8 is pressed against a detector cone 10 and thread is guided on to the cop by a guide 11. On completion of a cop, the spindle 1 ceases to rotate and is withdrawn from the cop which drops into an intercepting device. A holder 16 carrying thread catching means 13, 14, 15 moves to position the thread across the holder 3 so that the donning of a new cone butt 8 clamps the thread thereagainst, after which reverse turns of thread are wound in the groove 8d of the new butt 8. In a second embodiment the passage 8a is multisided to engage a multisided spindle 1 in addition to the conical portion of the spindle 1 being engaged by a conical portion 8b of the butt 8.
