Abstract
811,049. Semi-conductor amplifier. MARIE, G. R. P. July 9, 1957 [July 16, 1956], No. 21755/57. Class 37. An amplifying system comprises a semiconductor member 3 with a central cylindrical electrode 2 and a helical electrode 1 along its length. A D.C. bias between the two electrodes is provided by battery 5 and an axial magnetic field by permanent magnet 4. High-frequency input signals applied between the two electrodes at 10 result in amplified signals appearing between the electrodes at 11. The theory of operation is described, which involves the radial flow of current between the electrodes all along the length, which is deflected by virtue of the Hall effect which in turn is dependent upon the additional magnetic field due to current flowing through the helical electrode. In a modification, the positions of the cylindrical centre electrode 2 and helical electrode 3 are reversed.
