Abstract

810,847. Protective cut-out arrangements. CALOR-EMAG. ELEKTRIZITATS A.G. July 9, 1956 [July 21, 1955], No. 21191/56. Class 38 (5). A switching arrangement comprises a switch 1 adapted solely for the interruption of normal load currents and an interrupting means 2 in series therewith adapted for response to overload or short-circuit currents, the interrupting means being actuated by the ignition of an explosive substance when the rate of rise of current through the arrangement reaches a predetermined value. In the arrangement shown, the interrupting means 2 includes a switch, indicated at 10, in which a member holding the switch closed is broken by means of an explosive which is ignited by an ignition wire 5. The ignition circuit shown in Fig. 2 includes a transformer 3, a choke 7, an auxiliary transformer 4, a spark gap 8, a three-electrode spark gap 9 and a charged condenser 6. The choke 7 or a resistance (not shown) is adjusted so that when the rate of rise of current in the protected A.C. or D.C. circuit reaches the predetermined value, the spark gaps " fire " and the condenser 6 discharges through the wire 5 to ignite the explosive substance. A magnetic blow-out fuse may be arranged in parallel with the switch 10. A plurality of interrupting means may be arranged in series, the times of response of their ignition circuits being graduated. Should the protected circuit be a D.C. circuit then the transformer 3 may be given a bias magnetization.
