Abstract

Iron, steel, or iron alloy tubes, particularly gun barrels, are treated on their internal surfaces by bombardment with ions of carbon, silicon, or hydrogen, the ions being produced by glow discharge in a gaseous atmosphere. Nitrogen ions may also be present in the atmosphere and a gun barrel may be made the cathode, a wire passing through the bore, the anode, while a gas, e.g. a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, under reduced pressure, e.g. 1-10 mm. of mercury, is passed through the bore, the resulting glow discharge causing a layer of iron nitride to be produced on the internal surface of the gun barrel. The gases may be purified before use by treatment with ferrosilicon or ferroaluminium at 600 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C. Prior to treatment the internal surface may be bombarded by ions of a reducing gas, e.g. hydrogen. Specification 744,753 is referred to.
