Abstract
670,869. Gun barrels. SVENSKA AKTIEBOLAGET GARACCUMULATOR. July 7, 1950. [July 8, 1949] No. 17104/50. Class 119. A gun barrel has a nitrided layer formed on the surface of its bore, the layer being of a depth greater than .01 mm. and smaller than .6 mm. In an example the barrel is made of a tempered, nitridable steel of the following analysis : and the remainder iron. The barrel is placed horizontally in a closed box through which gaseous ammonia is passed, the box being kept heated in an oven at about 550‹C for 10 hours. This gives a nitriding depth of about .2 mm. The box is left to cool in the oven to a temperature of about 250 ‹C, during which time ammonia or some other inert gas should flow through the box to prevent the influx of air. Specification 589,069, [Group II], is referred to.
